We have been observed by Konsthantverkcentrum in Sweden for our use and collaboration as the first handicraft artist in the blog world.
I didn’t know that, but I’m glad that we get the attention.

Unfortunately is the text in Swedish, but I will try to translate it in a short cut… Later on...

En ny internetarena växer, att finnas i ”bloggosfären” öppnar nya möjligheter. Antalet bloggare ökar varje dag, man beräknar antalet till den svindlande summan av 100 miljoner. Där en hemsida fungerar som skyltfönster är bloggen också ett ett socialt rum och en plats för direktare dialog. Ett par av KHVCs medlemmar, smyckekonstnär Paula Lindblom och keramiker Karin Eriksson, äe entusiastiska bloggare. De var snabba att fatta vilket kraftfullt verktyg en blogg kan vara; som plats att marknadsföra sig på och för att hitta nya vänner i världen.

Paula Lindblom driver sedan två år The on-line jewellery project tillsammans med svenska Anni Jonsson, spanska Marta Miguel samt norska Marie Asbjørnsen och Maria Rodrigues. Det började med att Paula initierade en mejl-lista för 12 smyckekonstnärer. Den blev krånglig att hantera och kändes alltför sluten, så steget togs att starta en gemensam blogg för fem av dem, med inriktning på ett specifikt ämne, consumer society.
De kommunicerar nu sedan två år, synligt för resten av världen, om varandras pågående arbeten, mest är det Paula som sköter bloggen. Projektet växlar mellan att finnas på nätet och göra gemensamma ”verkliga” utställningar. Det aktualiserar ju också innehållet i bloggen och skapar nytt läsvärde. T.o.m. 26 juni har de en utställning på Nääs konsthantverk utanför Göteborg, den åker sedan vidare till Polen.

En evighetsmaskin
Nu har Paula också en egen blogg, på svenska. Man måste inte vara särskilt datakunnig, säger hon. Det är lätt och snabbt att uppdatera, man följer bara instruktionerna. Det är billigt, kostar ingenting att bli synlig och skapa relationer. ”När man väl har börjat sköter det sig själv, det är som en fantastisk evighetsmaskin, utan att man gör något mer sprids ens arbete runtom i världen”.
Hon har genom bloggandet upptäckt och fått kontakt med smyckekonstnärer som fokuserar på samma saker som hon själv; återvinning, material, konsumtionssamhället. Lite överraskad har hon förstått att hon är mycket populär i Spanien.
Paula har både bra och dåliga erfarenheter av att saker hon skrivit eller visat använts av andra. Man har ingen kontroll över det man en gång lagt ut, allt är öppet och offentligt och kan dyka upp som citat i andra sammanhang. Att en smyckesajt i Kalifornien lånat en bild från hennes hemsida och länkat till den är ju bra, men hon har också blivit citerad i lösryckta sammanhang.
Hon började med att sprida sin bloggadress till kontakterna i smyckevärlden ”Sedan sköter det sig själv. En digitalkamera och en blogg är allt som behövs, sen ligger världen öppen!”

Karin Eriksson bloggar på engelska från sin egen hemsida sedan två och ett halvt år. Hon kan räknas till proffsbloggarna, varje dag har hon cirka 2 500 unika besökare. Många av dem är amerikaner och många återkommer. Hon har lagt ner mycket arbete på att bygga upp sin läsekrets och göra sig känd. 1.5 – 2 timmar per dag lägger hon på att hålla sin blogg aktuell och intressant för läsarna.
Motivationen kommer ur att hon ville ha ett inspirationsarkiv, som hon också delar med sig av. När hon har nya egna projekt på gång skriver hon om dem, men det mesta handlar om annat. Personliga betraktelser om t.ex. examensstudenter från Konstfack, Överjärva där hennes verkstad finns, eller formgivare hon gillar. Hon har numera ett avslappnat förhållande till skrivandet.
”Jag måste utgå från mig själv, annars vore det inte kul att ha bloggen” säger hon. ”En del tjänar annonspengar på sina bloggar, men det skulle förstöra det varumärke jag bygger upp, om jag associeras med saker jag inte står för.”

Milstolpar på vägen
Karin berättar om några viktiga händelser som hjälpt till att göra henne känd. Redan tre veckor efter att hon startat nämndes hon av en stor och viktig blogg. Att en stor sajt länkade gav bra uppmärksamhet. Det ledde till att stora Internet world nominerade henne till en tävling där de utsett de 100 bästa bloggarna. Hon vann inte men fick ännu fler läsare tack vare det.
I maj 2006 blev hon intervjuad på Design Sponge, en stor amerikansk blogg som uppmärksammar små designföretag, då hittade ännu fler till henne (http://designsponge.blogspot.com/, intervjun med Karin kan höras under ”pod casts”). Tack vare att hon skriver en hel del om Överjärva, ville Svenska Institutet länka från sin hemsida till hennes personliga bild av Sverige. Den australiensiska Lonely Planet fick också syn på hennes blogg och kommer på grund av det att ha med hennes verkstad i Överjärva i sin nästa Skandinavenguide.
Det ena leder till det andra. Bäst blir det när man växlar mellan virtuella och personliga kontakter; hon är gärna med på mässor och utställningar också. Nu har hon närmare 30 återförsäljare i USA, Japan, Danmark, Australien, England och Sverige. Sista året har det varit svårt att producera i takt med beställningar, men nu ska hon pröva ha en långtidspraktikant och funderar på att anställa.

Nätet en växande marknad
I besöksstatistiken för KHVCs hemsida syns det också att bloggarna blir alltmer viktiga, genom konsthantverksintresserade bloggare hittar fler till oss.
Finns det några nackdelar då? Jo, att det är oöverskådligt och det gäller att inte överväldigas. Som nybörjare kan man utgå från någon bloggare man har förtroende för och klicka vidare i den personens länklista. Det växer också fram sökmotorer, liksom ”hit-listor” för de mest lästa och mest populära bloggarna.
Det finns redan starka kommersiella intressen, många av portalerna är reklamfinansierade, annonserna vänder sig till användarna som statistiskt sett är konsumtionssugna unga människor. Med tiden kommer bloggvärlden att bli än mer en direkt marknadsplats, på gott och ont. Det betyder nätshopar, öppen reklam och dolda påtryckningar men också större möjligheter att nå en stor publik, var man än bor.

The first years I worked with jewellery, I mainly used silver as material in my work. But some years ago, while I was studying at The National Collage of Art and Design in Norway, I saw an exhibition of toys, made by children from all over the world, where everything was made out of colourful garbage. These objects impressed me and inspired me so much, that I decided to start working with recycled materials myself.

During the last years, I have travelled to South Africa, Namibia and Mali, to dig deeper into cultures where recycling is a necessity and a common way of thinking. I have been looking for all kinds of things made out of waste; toys, jewellery, sculptures, furniture and shelters. The creativity and the strong will of looking for possibilities rather than despair, has made a strong impression on me. Being back in Norway, I have tried to learn from what I have seen, about turning trash into treasure.

My jewellery, which earlier would be made out of valuable materials, are now made out of colourful daily waste.

My inspiration for this project has been everyday life. When I lost a member of the family it struck me how the time in between important events seems to be what you really miss when you lose somebody dear to you. All the time that passes without really paying any attention...
That inspired me to explore my silver-recycling bin and look closer at all the pieces of scrap-silver that was cut out and left over. The pieces that were never used. The space in between. I used these forgotten leftover pieces of silver for this project. I also worked with fabrics from clothes which belonged to this person.
For me the exiting thing about using recycled materials in jewellery is all the memories that are attached to objects used by people.

Maria Rodrigues.

I remember some of the jewellery neighbours and relatives wore around their necks. It was made of two pieces of material that hang form a silky thread.
On these pieces was embroidered the symbols of Jesus meant to protect the user from the devil. Therefore, one on the front and another on the back.

My pieces are about an inner prayer, an inner complaint, a wish, and a secret feeling. The text is formulated like a pun of words. They are about the duality and ambivalence of feelings.

The materials used on my pieces are taken from old clothes, embroidered cloths, curtains and lace inherited from an old lady. By using these materials I wish to make visible values about to go lost.

My work makes reference to the essence of the person in the consumer society.

The satisfactions of this world are like honey on the edge of a knife, I lick it and appreciate the pleasant thing of its flavour, soon another sensation controls to first: then I have cut myself .I don’t want to be not worried and to be a person who travel by the life and can not see what I must to see. I don’t want to watch outwards and to break away from myself. I have accelerated the rate of my life and I am less patient.

About how recycling is a good as it gets but only if I do it and I don´t forget
If we put our heads together our earth will be alife for ever
My way to recycle is a way to pay my ecological debt
Plastic is one of the most I produce like exhausted.
Red the life’s colour, the white is the purity and the golden and blue colour the love and the soul of each one of us.

QWERTY
Have you ever asked yourself why the letters of a typewriter’s keyboard are placed in the order they are?
- No, I have never asked myself that question.
- We can call this keyboard QWERTY, the first keys of the upper row are placed like that.
The first typewriter was invented by Christopher Scholes in 1873, in order to improve the calligraphy. However, soon a problem arose, when the typebars jammed against each other and made it impossible to write.To solve this, Christopher Scholes designed the keyboard QWERTY, a keyboard which should force the user to write more slowly to keep the type arms from jamming. Typewriter keyboards, that in time became computer keyboards, were from the beginning designed for slower writing and not faster.

I started the on-line project in 2005 to establish a professional environment, where I could still be working from my little corner of the world. Internet makes it happen. www.jewelleryproject.blogspot.com

I have always been fascinated by “recycling” or reusage, to make new use of everyday things. To transform, to put in a different context.
As Pippi Longstocking says: Finders keepers.
That is how I relate to reuse and jewellery.
What I find both at home, in nature - in the form of waste or other natural materials - and at flea markets, forms the base for my attitude to resident shapes and expressions.

I want the original material and its shape to be visible, first to appear as a piece of jewellery, but by a closer look to come out as things of everyday life …

I have visited Cape Town, South Africa, to study reutilisation and recycling.
During my travels I had the opportunity to see incredible trinkets and art pieces including small glass beads, and upon my return my jewellery features such glass beads. Contrast and addition in communicating shape.

My jewellery is inspired from different regions of Africa, mixed with my own daily surroundings. Unisex is one aim with my jewellery.

My motto is: Curious about life.

Tankeväckande smyckekonst Återvinning är en aktuell sak. Men att driva den så långt som till smycketillverkning är kanske inte vad man i första hand funderar på.Några som gjort det är utställarna på Nääs Konsthantverk. Det blir en tankeväckande upplevelse för åtminstone LT:s betraktare.Paula Lindblom var den enda utställaren på plats vid lördagens vernissage. Det var kanske inte så konstigt, det handlade ju om ett projekt på nätet. Från början var tolv konsthantverkare inblandade, nu var det fem kvar när tankarna tog praktisk form i utställningen på Nääs. En spanjor, en öbo från Madeira, två svenskor och en norska visar sina produkter i galleriet.

Dessutom, som bonus, finns en HDK-elev, Gertrud Heinerud, som visar små fina smycken från en lite mer traditionell utgångspunkt i ett hörn av den tillhörande butiken.

Återvinnarna däremot vänder och vrider på begreppet smycke. Det får flera olika tolkningar i utställningen.Paula Lindbloms alster präglas av lekfullhet och mångtydighet. De kan vara smycken, eller hängande dekorationer, kanske i ett fönster.Men utgångspunkten är ofta en begagnad deodorant, kombinerad med andra fynd av det mer använda slaget. Resultaten ser dock helt nyskapade och fräscha ut, och bär gärna på en egen liten kommentar till vår konsumtionsaptit.Anni Jonssons broscher är tillverkade av restprodukter från annan smyckestillverkning. Det blir riktigt abstrakta resultat av det tillvägagångssättet. Maria Rodrigues arbetar med textila material. Roligast är hennes stora halssmycke, som bland annat består av ett rosafärgat blixtlås.Det dekorativa i avfallet tar norska Marie Asbjörnsen väl tillvara. Att hennes smycken är tillverkade av delar till gamla ölburkar är inte det allra första som slår betraktaren, snarare är det deras lätta och luftiga karaktär som faller i ögonen.Maria Miguel visar ringar av annorlunda utseende. Några är textila, andra är tillverkade i blandade material. Plast och silver är en gångbar kombination i sammanhanget och ger ett utmanande resultat.

Utställningen pågår till den 26 juni. Och under sommarhalvåret, maj till september, är Nääs Konsthantverk öppet alla dagar i veckan. Så här finns många chanser att studera en verkligt alternativ återvinningsidé. Efter Nääs kommer turen att gå till Krakow i Polen, där samma konstnärer kommer delta.

Hi! Nice to see so many new pictures on the blogg!
I send some photos from the exhibition I took part in this fall ; "In from the north", the netherlands. Materials; aluminiumboxes and coated steel-wire.

I also put out some photos from workshops with kids this fall, they have made crowns out of recycled materials, and it has been very inspiring! A lot of eager and creativity!

Now is my focus to do jewelleries and objects for a specific place, for these choose I have been down by the waterfront here in Gothenburg and collecting garbage’s from the small beaches… I have also collected garbage’s from South Africa in the poor areas, from small islands in the archipelago of Gothenburg etc. So now I have different places and themes to work with. This is a start and I don’t know for the moment if this is a side track or if I will bee in this for awhile…

I want to show you an inspiration source…
Just now I have a workshop with retarded people. It’s about jewellery art.
It’s a source of inspiration for my work as a jewellery artist.
This brooch is made by a man, only with colour pipe cleaners.
Acknowledge that this is a fresh piece of something that can be an interesting jewellery piece in the end?!

- Why recycling material?

- Why use recycling material into jewelleries?

- How do I think about jewelleries made out of garbage, recycling, flea market stuff, seeds etc?

- How do others look at jewellery made out of these materials?

- What is a recycling material? Could it be what ever? Include seeds, dried plants, moose dropping etc.

- Is it recycling material as fast as you use it or turn it in to another context?

I feel happy when I see things that have been transforming from one material into another, or have been putting in a new context. But I don’t know where the limit is for recycling material, is it just your own imagination the limit or is it some limit in the society?

As jewellery artist, is it necessary to use silver and gold and other precious metal?
I don’t think so, but I have seen a lot of jewellery artist working and using recycling materials, the vintage and so on, and they also use gold and silver details with these materials…
Some times I get the feeling that the colour and shape aren’t enough. That some of this jewellery artist don’t trust the material and actually need to bring in silver /gold etc. into the jewellery…
Or may be they want to proof that they can handle these kind of material as well (silver, gold) to proof that they have the knowledge…

For me I think it’s more interesting to see what’s coming out of a material, to press it till some limit in it self… Without using precious metal, or noble stones, pearls and so on.
BUT in the same time, I’m use glass beads, ready made porcelain figure that I have found at flea markets…Where are the different?
I don’t know where the limit goes, when the line is crossed…
It’s no point to use material only because of the value of the material I think, it’s better to use the material you need to visualise the thing you want to do and the story you need to tell/do.
First the thought then the material.

Why I’m using recycling materials?

1. It’s a comment of this society we all are a part of… We have a very small choice to use refill system and everything is cheaper to buy new, then try to repair it.
Using shampoo cans, deo cans etc. I show my statement that it’s possible to use these things again in another way…
Only the imagination is your limit!
To use these kind of material, gives me the opportunity to show others that we live in a over consumer society.
2. I think that this material who are for free… is interesting for me to use as a jewellery maker. First of all, I can’t afford to work experimental in the way I want with silver and gold, I don’t have that kind of workshop or studio for that moment and my purse as a jewellery is too small, actually…
3. I like the challenge about this, I have always been interesting to find things and transform them into something “new” or something different. I feel a strong fascination to doing these kinds of jewelleries, using recycling materials, flea market stuff etc.
I’m fascination about that me and other people can see things in a material and the transform it, bring out something new from a piece of “garbage”, that other people will trough away.

Why jewelleries?

For me it has always been interesting, calm to sit and doing “small” things…
It’s a way of meditation, focus on small complicated things, putting together, take a way and so on… When I turn into this “small” meditation world, I can be there for hours. When I’m working I’m curios about what’s coming up next if I add something or take a way from the next jewellery or object, small changes… The process leads me further, my curiosity has no end.

Now I am working with mostly necklace and brooches…
Necklace because they have a central place on the body, it’s close to the heart and the soul.

Brooches is interesting in that way that you are able to put them everywhere you want, assume that you have clothes on… It’s just and only the imagination who stops you.

- I like the size of jewelleries…

- I like the idea of using the body as a showcase.

- I like that people has to take responsibility of what they choose to wear, it’s always a statement to wear jewelleries… In one way or another.

If we all look back, I think we had done a lot…
Even if it has been good and bad energy in this, we are moving forwards.

I think we have done it well, even if I thought that this project would be muche easier to do…
I thought that people/jewellery artist who accepted this cooperation was more “ON”, that the project would develop into some thing big, interesting because of the jewellery artist who join this on-line project. But I have learned that people want to have frames, have some one who got the last word and so on, and that was never my idea about this project… I think the once who is left, is strong and good working jewellery artist, and I really look forward to the exhibition with this people and meet them in the reality!

So, NOW we use the blog once again to the first exhibition in Norway/Oslo 2007.

Keep on working and I think it would be nice if you put in your other exhibitions on the blog too, Even if it some parallel things I think it’s interesting for me and others to see what on.

I toatally agree, paula, no one has done anything wrong, so this is not a complaning to anyone. I have been very silent myself, so I just needed to check it out, what you were all thinking!

We make the three exhibitions we have planned. Yesterday I had an opening in the same gallery, together with six other jewellers in Oslo. It was very nice, and the exhibition turned out to be very nice looking, so I am happy I now know the room a little bit before our exhibition is coming up! It will be great!

Your english is much better than mine, Paula, so no probleme! It sounded like a very nice welcome for your south african friend, by the way..

I don't think anyone has done anything wrong, that's not the problem.
The problem has been the communication and silence from "all" the once
who are in this...
I think the silence come from everyone, even the people who ask a
question about to cancel it, BUT I also think that it is GOOD that this
question is coming up. Under the time this project has been going on, I
have must end up deadlines, at lest 2 times or may be it's 3 times? I
think that shows that people have a hard time to follow the "rules" and
be in time etc. Now we are there again, but this time I don't like the
idea of ending it like this, because I can't tell the places who has
said yes, that we cancel it. I can't! This was my biggest fear when I
contacted the galleries and so on, that someone gone get cold feet and don't show up... But I trust all of you who are in this project!!! I

agree with it...

well if we are on it ,at the end we could finish the proyect with your first idea,Paula,exhibit the work and the proyect.
and if the proyect is in some how poor or not an artistic piece of art,well that is the result of a new idea to work on a group ,and original way to do,to comunicated with peolple that I never see and know.
I never see the process and the discussion of the people that prepare an exhibition.
some times people send the pieces on a date and that all and in this proyect you can see and talk about the pieces on the process It´s good it´s different way to do.
and I think it has more value for the reason that the comunication by mailing is more dificult

I hope you have had some good sleep, Paula, even though your head was full
of thoughs after my mail. I have a good sleep, when I finally closed my eyes.
I am not sure if I understand what you mean about being "one" person, but I
think you mean that I speak for both of us, maria and me? I undserstand that
seems strange. The thing is that Maria is in the north, putting up a big
exhibition, she has lots to do and she does not have internett access there.
She has had a very buissy summer, participating and putting up a big number
of exhibitions, and she was so tired yesterday. She did not have much energy
left, so I said I would write and tell what we had been speaking about, to
take that part of work away from her shoulders. Something like that, yesterday
I was a little bite angry about that’s you “complain” and haven’t answer my mail either.
I really really understand that you have a full schedulers, I have it too…

And I think the organizying through internett is one of the things that has
been difficult for all of us, speaking for myself, I am not good enough to
use internett often enough and in an easy way. And I think that is what has
happend to Maria, Anni and martina as well, since it has been quiet. It is a
new way of working for everyone, and it has been a bit difficult, but the
idea is great! This is a new way, and I don’t think it easy either.
I’m not so very good at computers, but I got one at home witch is easer and quicker…
My biggest problem is my English. I can’t express my self the way I want, that’s my biggest problem. But I try and I think I’m on my way…

I am not going to leave the project if everybody want to do the exhibition,
then we do the exhibitions we have planned and we do them well! Maria said
the same on the phone. Phu! Absolutely, we will do it well!!!
I’m glad that you don’t “jump” and leave me in this…

I am waiting to hear from anni and martina as well, and then we go from
there.
I think skipping the catalouge could be a way of redusing the work of this
project, but I am open for discussions.
I don’t want to do a publication any more; it’s to much work… IF we want, we can do one by our self.

Well I think that to do a catalogue is good for us but I´m sure that all the people has a lot experiencie than me doing exhibitions.
I think too the idea and the resolution of this proyect it has been really great ,people say this about it.

OPS!

I have been working this evening and I saw a phone call from Norway on
my cell. Sorry, I haven't my cell with me when I'm working.

I don't agree with cancel this project! I will that we all show our
things at lest on the galleries who have say yes for this. I can't
cancel it, I can't!

I have asked around for some other places too, but I haven't got any
answer jet, and if I get a YES, I cancel it, I promise! It´s in Belin,
in Stockholm and in Malmoe here in Sweden.

I agree with you that it has been so empty from all of the others...
But I know that Anni has computer trouble. I and that she will be on
the line in a couple of days.
I also agree with Love Jönsson about the critic he give us in the
speech, but I have no problem with that, I think he has right about the
critic, but this is the first time like this, so it has some child
sickness... No a doubt about it, but I also know that he look forward to see this live.

Way I haven't use the site, the blog is that I will work out my things
for the coming exhibitions.
My thought was that we have ending it on the blog for some time, just
to end it up in this coming shows.

I have no problem with that we are still five in this project, because
I think quality is better than quantity... I like all your things you
have done and what you have been doing.
It's not a big show we are travelling along with, but for me it's okay
for this time.

Hi everybody!

I am back from amsterdam, and it was a nice trip and opening!

The summer has gone very quick, and now fall is here..

First of all; Thanks for the critic you sent this summer, Paula. I read
it again today, and I have to say I very much agree on the critic coming up..

I spoke with Maria on the phone earlier today, and I tried to call you,
Paula, just to discuss everything a bit, because I find it harder on
internett. But I could not reach you, so I will try to write.

After talking with Maria, it turned up that both of us feel lack of
energy aroud this project. Maybe some of the reason is that both of us
have many exhibitions we are working with, and a lot of work to do. But
I also think it has to do with the fact that it seems like it is lack
of interest in the group aswell (except Paula). The whole project feels
a bit thin, after so many left, few of us have been active on the
blogsite, and it seems like Paula is the only one who is carrying the project.

After reading through the critic, Maria said she wished that the
project did

not end in an exhibition, but that the plog was an open and alive site
for everyone to put out pictures, as long as it was interest out there,
and that

that was it. (The intension of having exhibitions all over the world,
is a good idea aswell, but ofcourse a lot more to organize.) How it is
now, it seems like no one is visiting the site, and making comments,
not even the five of us, and the thing that is waiting now is the exhibitions.
So both Maria and I are wondeing: is there enough interest in the group
of continuing the blog and to actually do the exhibitions?

I know this is coming late, and I know that we have said yes to take
part in exhibitions. Both Maria and I will sty in and take part in the
exhibitions that are booked, if the three of you really want to do
these exhibitions. I just want to check out what you all really think,
because I still think there is time to cansel.

When it comes to apply for more exhibitions, maria and I are not really
interested in that. We do not feel comfortable with sending the
blogsite around as an application, it is to much mess and we do not
find it profesionel enough. (that is also comments we have got showing
it around)

I hope this is not making anyone angry, and specially not you, Paula,
because I know you have put so much energy into this, and I really
respect you for that. But I just find it important to check out what
you all think about this, because it has been so little communication
through this period,

(except with you, paula.), and it is still a lot of work to do, if we
continue.

Hi dear jewelleryfriends!

I hope that you have a great summer.

I have a nice and calm summer with lots of nice small and bigger trips in
Sweden… A really good summer with lots of SUN! Love it! My last swim and
sun tanning I have this last Friday, and it was 20 degrees in the ocean.

Now the autumn is here and we have to start thinking about our further
About the on-line project. I haven’t got any more answer from places… Sorry for that. I will contact some other places and I hope you all will do the same…

We have some publicity in Germany this summer, in the beginning… Love
Jönsson the hand craft critic has talking about the project in a big
convent. (I hope I was sending this text to you???) It was not only good
words but I think it was good that he wanted to use this project in his
speech.

Now we have three exhibitions next year, and I hope that everyone can be there…with 3- 5 objects, jewelleries each.

We have to think about how we should do with the publication and “all” the
invitation cards too.

I have a purpose… That everyone of you are sending me some information in
English about your work, and may be how you have been working in this
project and what you think about the cooperation. It could be nice that
people can take part of our work, together over the internet and not only
by saying; that it looks great or nice.

Its a little bite tin in the end on the blog with comments about the work
We have done etc.

And the in the same time that you are sending me the text, you also send me
photos who you want to be in the publication, may be one, two or three
photos in high quality.

If some one of you have a nice photo of some kind of recycling thing that
We can have on the front, would be nice…

Is it possible to do the invitation card on the same idea?! I think that we

A jewellery on-line project

”Subject; Consumer Society”
an international collaboration

Started in February 2005
on initiative of Paula Lindblom

One year later, we are 5 participants in this on-line project.
Some has left the project and some new has entered.

Project Description

In September 2005 we opened up a blogg for this project: www.jewelleryproject.blogspot.com
(Before we communicate over our e-mail addresses)

The background for this project was the idea of making an international collaboration, with jewellery artists from different places around the world. The idea was that the participants would work by themselves in there own hometown, and country. At the same time they are connected, getting feedback and so on from other jewellery artist.
We had a main theme; “The Consumer Society”.
Subtitle and working methods; to work with recycling materials, junk, flea market stuff. To document the work and the process, to have contact with others via internet for discussions, reasoning, constructive critic/response on each others works trough text and photos.

The participant has only met through the internet, not jet in the reality, outside the internet space.

Every participant has made a work and made their own translation of the subject. There has not been any censor in this project.

The project is in constant motion, and some participants are still working on new ideas.

The blogg has become an art piece in itself.
A space for meeting, a space for participating in what’s going on, and coming up etc.

At the blogg, you can see the result so far.
The participants have presented their work in text and photos.

The project will end up with exhibitions in all the different cities/countries where participants live. Everyone who takes part in this project has accepted to arrange for an exhibition, to contact galleries or to find alternative exhibition situations or places.
It is not necessary to show the result of the project in a gallery. It might as well take place in any empty premises in the town where the participant live.

SOMETIMES YOU JUST HAVE TO CLOSE YOUR EYES AND THROW YOUR SELF INTO THE COLD WATER! YOU MIGHT FREEZE YOU MIGHT REGRET AND YOU MIGHT ENJOY IT SO MUCH THAT YOU WANT TO DO IT EVERYDAY.

I fully understand if you don’t feel ready of if you don’t connect to this project. Following deadlines is quite important in our adult life and specially if you want to accomplish something as an artist. Some people are more enthusiastic than others---they move the world forward!

I believe the "forced" thing is a private matter. I my self feel "fucked up"
with so much work in front of me. But I also have to drink the coffee while it’s warm. After all...isn’t art about taking chances?

About the theme: What strikes me most about flea markets are all the memories that are stored there. I wanted to work with the "consumer society/recycle"- theme from that point of view. The memories left behind were what intrigued me. This was the startingpoint for me.

About the result: I put together pieces out of my own scrap, they are kind of abstractions of memories. I used my leftover silver, the discarded pieces and the spaces in between forms sawed out. The pieces that lay in the "silver junk bin".

You never know what piece of your life is selected to be remembered, it's not as you can chose only the most lovely parts for keeping. But when you look closer the "space in between" can be really beautiful, too. The parts of your life that were only there without no significanse at the time. Nothing particularly interesting said or done... Just ordinary life passing by. In the end, maybe this space inbetween exiting events are really what you cherish. The things that seemed to be nothing at the time.

The first years I worked with jewellery, I mainly used silver as material in my work. But some years ago, I saw an exhibition of toys, made by children from all over the world, where everything was made out of colourful garbage. These objects impressed me and inspired me so much, that I decided to start working with recycled materials myself.

During the last years, I have travelled to South Africa, Namibia and Mali, to dig deeper into cultures where recycling is a necessity and a common way of thinking. I have been looking for all kinds of things made out of waste; toys, jewellery, sculptures, furniture and shelters. The creativity and the strong will of looking for possibilities rather than despair, has made a strong impression on me.

My jewellery are made out of daily waste as tin-cans and newspapers. I like the idea of refining waste and transform it into something valuable and new!

I work with textile, photo and video installations

I remember some of the jewellery neighbours and relatives wore around their necks. It was made of two pieces of material that hang form a silky thread. On these pieces was embroidered the symbols of Jesus meant to protect the user from the devil. Therefore one in front the other in the back.

My pieces are about an inner prayer, an inner complaint, a wish and a secret feeling. The text is formulated like a pun of words. They are about the duality and ambivalence of feelings.

The materials used on my pieces are taken from old clothes, embroidered tablecloths, curtains and lace inherited from an old lady. By using these materials I wish to make visible values about to go lost.

”Have you ever asked yourself why the letters of a typewriter’s keyboard are placed in the order they are?

- No, I have never asked myself that question.
- We can call this keyboard QWERTY, the first keys of the upper row are placed like that.

The first typewriter was evened by Christopher Scholes in 1873, in order to improve the calligraphy. However, soon a problem arose, when the type arms strikes against each other and made it impossible to write.

Then Christopher Scholes designed the keyboard QWERTY, a keyboard which should force the user to write more slowly and not faster. The typewriter's as well as the computer's keyboards were from the beginning designed for slower writing and not faster”.

From avocado pell to platsic cans, and some glass beads...

Here are some photos on model about my way of working to find the idea about the consumer society. It’s a lot of ideas; it’s a lot of materials…Or may be the combination of materials?!
I’m interesting about the things we have in our homes, everyday life things and the combination with glass beads.
I have new ideas to work further with; one thing leads to the other. That’s a nice feeling, to see what’s happened and take responsibility for the “next” thing/idea that shows up.
This is not the end...I hope that the end never shows up, it’s a process.

It’s really popular just for the moment all about this consumer society, and recycling subject… It’s a lot of vintage in the fashion magazine and shops, artists are working with recycling, writers are writing about it etc.

I saw a program on the television about Erlend Loe, a Norwegian writer, talking about his last book; Dobbler… It’s about a man who doesn’t want to be excellent and good, moving out in the forest and so on… I haven’t read this book jet, but it’s on my list.
Erlend Loe talks about the book that it was some kind of reflection about the consumer society, to walk a way from it and live the own life, to take what the nature and the forest giving us, not just buying things and be excellent citizens etc.

It’s a little bite in the time to reflect over the consumer society and the culture we are living in. I think that it is good that people reflect over this, this in my eyes a over consumer society.
I like that we and other artist use this subject to do something about it, and I like that we get so far with this project.

If someone in the project find text or other material about how much we consume, would it be nice to put it into the blog, as a parallel and a comments to this things we are working with.
I’m a little bite curios about this vintage by my self, last year 2005 seems like a very popular year to call flea market stuff for vintage and also jewelleries made out of flea market stuff etc… a “new” fashion word.

If you who is in this project get comments from friends or jewellery artist, please put it into the blog, so the rest of us also can see what other are thinking about this project, or may be you can ask people to leave comments to you, and then you could put it into the blog?!

You also have to start thinking about when and were we can show the things in your surroundings. I have a plan that we can show this on Nääs Konsthantverk, may be in May 2007. May be it’s also possible to have some kind of workshop in the same time?!
I know this in February…about the date to exhibit, so I return later on.

A last question; is it okay to change the name on this project to?:
The Consumer society – The Consumer culture.
Now we call it the on-line jewellery project… But I think if we should have an exhibition name, this is a better name.

I had this email from my girlfriend about our project, and just wanted to share it.

"Was reading about a cafe in Berlin called cafe Kauf Dich Gluecklich, buy to make yourself happy, where you can buy the furniture, the pictures and even the waitresses earrings, while eating wafers and ice cream. Perhaps you could do something similar with your consumer jewellery project. As one of your exhibitions you could have a cafe for a few days and wear all your jewellery. Combine some kind of thought salon with market and trading, creating desire and repulsion with your bejewelled ness.

I like how in consumer thinking the lines get blurred between people and objects. I also think its slightly creepy too! Its funny how recycling seems to have become the flip side of the coin to the consumer market and how there is so much morality and value judgements inherent in the terms themselves.

I loved the melted plastic and the blurred posters.

Its a great idea that you are working this way. Look forward to seeing lots more images liked your sauce bottles. Made me think how an element of the consumer society is to sauce it up, make it less bland.

The on-line jewellery project

I’m working and working, just for the moment more in my brain that in real life, if you understand what I mean?!

I started with avocado shells – glass beads and images…
Later on me collected different plastic cans form my home and the everyday living…
Then I run up to this amazing graffiti pieces…
I bought a warm heat air gun so I can melt down things in my home, things that I have and have found at flea markets… Inspirited by Marta and Anni.
The last things I have done is this deodorant can with the little porcelain bear in it and a “Bliw” soap that I have saw and put glass beads in. ( this haven’t I show you jet…)
And this is the closer I have come, to mix plastic cans, things from the flea market and to melt things… I like the idea to mix things and put it in some other context.

Now I wonder if you can tell me who is most interesting, because I’m a little bite stuck in this, what should I chose???

I like every part of my work, but I seems it a little bite to sprawling for the moment.

I have also some thoughts about this to making jewellery…
Is it necessary to use metal in jewellery pieces, so people understand that it’s for “real” and “serious”?!

I know when I see your things that it’s not necessary, BUT?! Are you also struggle with this kind of question? When is it a jewellery piece and how far can you go?

Now when I’m working with this kind of material it feels like I’m walking on the edge, it’s so easy that it ends up as a child has done it into kindergarten… It takes a lot of thinking, consideration and working/seeing to do things with these materials.
Just for the moment I think that I have loosing the control over the clear seeing, how to work with this, how I can do it well?!

I have a lot of new energy and also new culture seeing of this, after my trip to South Africa and the Cape Town area. You take what you have and then you create something “new” and in my case some kind of jewellery… But will people understand this in the West? And is it necessary that they do it, understand?
As long as you are true by your self and that you know why you are doing these things…

Happy New Year

I am still working with my child-woman-man consumer, trying to creat images of different needs that are related to consuming.... ? I think these hankies have potential for the woman, together with some pearls from the fifties.

I don't know if I will manage to make pieces for all 3 groups, and my main focus is still on the child (my first model is the yellow 'padding')

I have found some items that I want to use for my child piece. Teddy bears, gloves and watch straps. I would like my piece to be made up of these things into many little paddings, but in such a way that they can also be spilt up and placed all over the body, or trail along after you on a long chain

Gloves found round about remind me of the way we all need company, to be close, to be touched - and I replace presens with teddy bears to hug for when I am not there.

Here they are nesting together, waiting for more friends.

I saw a lots of interesting things and I meet a lots of interesting and friendly people, most craftsman.

The on-line jewellery project

Dear Jewellery Friends.

I hope your New Year has started well?!

I have set up a deadline date at the 9th of January, BUT I have to change it.
I put the next deadline to the end of February 2006.

I and we started this on-project in February 2005 and I think it’s nice to show each other what we have coming up with under this year…
- In text and images, jewelleries that we have done about this subject; the consumer society and the consumer culture.
After that everyone who is in this on-line project has show the idea, the things and so on, we can started to take contact with gallery’s, magazines, people who may be can response at our work.
I have some ideas about to take this further, but I’m waiting for your things, the text and the images…
The blog is an art piece init self, but the final is to show our things at places in the hometown of every participant.

I’m have to tell you all, that I’m a little disappointed about this on-line project and it have take a lots of my energy to push this further on.
But I will end it! Absolutely...
I think that if you have said YES to this, that you want to be a part of this on –line project, you also have to act. Some of you haven’t been “so” in… When I’m written this I still don’t know who is in or who is out, and I think that’s a little bite sad for the people who is really in and take this project serious, even if I and some others are doing other things on the same time… We are still in this project and communicate with each other over the blog.

Please, you who know that you don’t have use the blog or communicate, can you for the last time tell me and the others if you are in or out!
I have says NO to someone, and I think you have to answer once for all.

I have also invited two jewellery artist from South Africa and the Cape Town area; Verna Jooste and Karen Jay.
They are both working with recycling jewelleries and they are really good!
I hope they will replay as soon as possible, but I know that they have summer holiday just now and Verna Jooste work on the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town, and I have only here work mail.

So, keep on working and if you don’t want to be in this project, please tell me and the others as fast that you can! So Anni can do the final set up for this blog.
